First of May Picnic: Potluck of 12 Countries

on the first of may, spain had its labor day.

everyone had work off.  a group of friends and i hiked an hour uphill and shared dishes from our respective countries–in my homestay, we arent allowed to use the stove so i brought coca-cola. classically marketed american. in all, we were over 40 people from 12 countries from north, central, and south america, europe, and the nordic and scandinavian countries.

we differed in appearance, mindset, political affiliations, and languages. but we shared our thoughts, card games, food, and of course soccer/fútbol under the spanish sun.

getting back down the mountain, we got lost for about 40 minutes, but with fearless leading and good attitudes, we made it down. a great end to a great international day.

enjoy the spring!

Final Push!!!

Finals week starts tomorrow!!!!

A tough semester is coming to an end.  I’m sure we are all excited to get this week over with and get to summer!  How finals here works is you usually get one or two reading days as well as the weekend to study.  Then over the course of the upcoming week, you have your finals.  There are three sessions each day Monday through Saturday (Saturday usually only has 2 sessions) Hopefully they are spread out, but sometimes you just get unlucky!  Finals time is kind of nice though because unlike midterms, you get the whole day off to just study for your finals.  I personally prefer finals so much more than midterms because I get to study on my own schedule and not have to do projects for other classes simultaneously.  I’m sure you don’t want to read an entire post about finals so I’m going to skip to after finals…

The week after finals is senior week!  For seniors, this is the week that many of them have been looking forward to all year.  There are many events for seniors to bond before graduation.  Most of them go to Vegas for the first part of the week and then enjoy sometime with family and friends.  As a non-senior, this is a really fun week as well.  You get to enjoy campus with no more obligations.  Enjoy LA, go to theme parks, do nothing, go to senior events??? …maybe.  It’s a great time to be on campus.  Last year during senior week, I had training for a leadership position, but I was also able to stick around and enjoy the week.  We did things such as going to the beach for a bonfire, or going to someones house nearby for a hot tub party, or even movie nights on campus.  Its kind of like the end of summer camp haha…kinda but not really..

Anyways, as much fun as the week is, it is often sad to see some of the seniors go!  When you come to Oxy, many students invest a lot of themselves into this school.  You really appreciate that when someone leaves the campus and goes onto his or her own life.  I mean its something you’ll experience…

K. Off to more studying!! I’ll post again soon!!!

Today Was the Perfect Day

And here’s why:

So Japanese are super into Western sweets, which I don’t understand because Japanese deserts are the best thing ever, but there you have it. I guess they’re just a sweet-loving culture. Anyway, so this morning I woke up to the sunniest, most beautiful day I’ve ever seen. It wasn’t too hot either, nor むし (humid). My host mom had mentioned she wanted to go to a dessert place today, and told me the wait would be long as it is Golden Week, and today specifically is Children’s Day. We drove for about an hour into the mountains. My neighborhood is fairly rural, but there is actually a downtown. Where we went makes my town look like a metropolis. I saw cows. In Japan. Anyway, so we had about an hour wait and visited some clothing stores across the street from the lovely building shown above, and went to get a traditional Japanese snack called Karinto.

Photocrastination

It’s crunch time here at Occidental College. This morning I turned in the longest paper I have ever written in my academic career. Tomorrow I have a shorter paper due for my International Economics class and a slightly longer one is due for my Modern Latin American History class on Monday…which is the same day my final exams start (I’ll be taking three in total).

I’m not writing my paper right now though, I’m composing a blog post while screwing around with Photoshop. I was returning to my dorm room today after an event that I brought my camera to and I found this photo opportunity–so I took it.

As the end of the semester approaches

I’ve noticed that every time finals week rolls around teachers decide to give more and more work due on the day OF a final. I am currently working on an 8-10 pg paper due this week, not to mention a 10-15pg paper due Monday (the day of my final when I have a presentation too!), a 5-10 pg Music paper due on the day of our cumulative final, and I have a Spanish final and a Stats for Psych final to study for…really professors?! Yeah that’s a little taste of junior year for all you future students! I feel so overwhelm that I cannot WAIT until Friday of next week..that is, if I survive…

Word to the wise: Be aware of what the professors put in the syllabus and plan ahead. If the syllabus says that there will be a paper and a final, think about starting it early. Also in regards to majors, if you are sure of the major you want to complete, start taking classes freshman year. Get ahead of the game.

Well that’s all I can write today. Best of luck to all and have a great rest of the semester/year!

Observations of Japan and Familial Contact

Soooooo Japan is awesome.

Over the past three weeks (wow, has it already been that long!?) I’ve been sort of observing my progression along the road of culture shock and in-so-doing have come across some glaring dissimilarities between Japan and America. I’ll give a short taste then move on to what’s new this week below.

Time is FLYING!

Hello readers! Don’t worry, I haven’t caught a rare disease or fallen off of the earth, although it may seem like I have judging by my lack of posting! So, here’s my excuse for not posting in a while:
This past weekend we had our last four softball games. Our last two home games were on Friday, which also happened to be the schools 125th anniversary and the Founders Day celebration!
As you’ve probably heard or seen, the school had a big carnival to celebrate the anniversary, which unfortunately I missed out on because I was too busy playing 2nd base! The carnival had games, balloon animal makers (do they have a specific name?) face painters, henna artists, and of course a FERRIS WHEEL

On Saturday we played our final two games away at Whittier (and not to toot my own horn or anything, but I’d say it was my best game of the season!). Ending a season is always bitter sweet, but this time it may have been more sweet – check out the picture to see why!

Anyway, now that softball is over I’ve been trying to use my time efficiently by meeting with professors, going to the gym, and even cleaning my room!
Although I’m also treating myself to a night off this Thursday, for Six Flags’ College night!!! Oxy is providing tickets to students for just $27 for complete access to the park from 6-12 at night! And only college students can go! I’m going with a group of Thetas and I’m really pumped!

Another thing I have more time for now is homework. With that said, I need to go finish my Econ lab!!! But I promise I will use this newfound time to blog more!!!

Until next time,
– Lisa G =)

All You Can Drink, Japan Style

I realize I just posted like a week ago, but Japan is so awesome I just want to share more!

Yesterday a bunch of the Tokyo International University (TIU) students put on a welcome party for the Japanese Studies Program (JSP) students. We went to something called nomihoudai, which means all you can drink. About 60 people showed up, maybe 15 of whom were Americans (and one German), and crammed into a room with four tables to eat, drink, and yell bilingually for two hours, for one low price of 2300yen, which is about $25.
