At the intersection of information, technology and ideas…
Through this blog, IR staff provide information about the various resources, technologies and services available to the campus community. This also serves as a place to share stories about how faculty, students and staff are using digital content and technologies as they explore new ways to teach, learn and work.

Release to Print update – Coming Soon to Res Halls
It’s been two weeks since we began the new Release to Print pilot project in the Academic Commons and we wanted to update you on our progress. While we have encountered some challenges, overall the pilot program has been a success, and is helping to reduce the amount of unwanted printing. We have decided to move forward with the next phase of the pilot project. We will implement the Release to Print system in the Residence Halls on Wednesday, March 21st.
Our biggest complaint has been that the process is slower. This is true; adding the release step does add time to the process, and we do not take this lightly. However, the release feature also reduces waste, and therefore the overall cost of printing.
How much paper has Release to Print saved? We’ve posted a webpage that shows the current stats, updated every 10 minutes. You can see that about 15% – averaging around 1100 pages a day – are sent to the printers in the Academic Commons, but never released. Most print jobs are sent double-sided, so that means we’re saving about 650 sheets of paper per day along with the accompanying reduction in toner, electricity, and wear and tear on the machine itself.… more
Pharos Print Drivers
ITS has launched a pilot project in the Academic Commons that changes the way printing & copying are done on the public multifunction devices in this building. Our new print management system, Pharos Uniprint, utilizes “release to print” functionality. In order to print or copy, all members of the community must swipe their ID card or enter Oxynet credentials at the printer.… more
The Academic Commons Emerges
The Information Resources (IR) division provides the Occidental College community with a rich environment of people, texts, technologies, and learning spaces designed to enable discovery, creation, and scholarship. Over the summer, the division reorganized to better meet changing needs of the Oxy community. This fall, IR staff launch a focused portfolio of new and existing services, as well as enhanced access to technology for students in re-arranged and remodeled spaces. With these first steps toward creating a more cohesive intellectual center for the Oxy community, the Academic Commons begins to materialize. … more
2011/12 Library Break Hours extended thanks to student feedback
After receiving advice from students this spring semester, we are extending the Library’s break hours per the chart below for academic year 2011/12. The net effect is that the Library will be open several hours later on holiday weekends and during the weeknights of spring break.
We hope this change meets the needs of those, especially seniors working on Comps, who prefer to work in the Library. Staff will monitor the building during these hours so that we can gather data about use patterns.… more
Academic Commons….the history
In his 2009 inaugural address, President Jonathan Veitch called for Occidental to re-imagine the Library as a premier scholastic environment that makes visible our commitments as a 21st –century liberal arts and sciences college. Through that transformation, technologies, resources and services would be combined in new ways to deliver a more seamless, integrated experience for students and faculty. The transformation would be greatly informed by the growing impact of digital technologies and computing networks on learning, creating and teaching. And the existing Clapp Library facility would be renovated as a hub for scholarship and innovation.… more
